Surgery at CAER is always under the direct care of your Consultant Plastic Surgeon, direct referrals are made to members of the CAER team for rehabilitation physiotherapy, or for non-surgical aesthetic treatments. Top

Margaret Strick

Margaret Strick is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon. Her subspecialty areas of interest in Plastic Surgery are the aesthetic and reconstructive aspects of breast surgery, hand surgery and facial skin surgery. She enjoys all aspects of cosmetic surgery.

She believes in the utmost professionalism and artistry in Plastic Surgery. She believes good results in Plastic Surgery are achieved by the closest attention to detail, meticulous technique and focus on the patient's needs.

As an NHS consultant she regularly undertakes surgery for breast reconstruction including free flap microsurgery, complex hand reconstruction and surgery for facial skin cancer.

She is a fully accredited Plastic Surgeon who is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery. She is fully trained in the United Kingdom. She has undertaken subspecialty training in Oxford, United Kingdom, Sydney, Australia and Houston Texas, USA.

Her qualifications include Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Wits, 1989), Master of Surgical Science (UCL, 1997), Diploma of Practical Dermatology (Cardiff, 2000), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow, 1995) and Intercollegiate Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery (FRCS (Plast), 2002). She has a certificate in Bioethics in Medicine. She received an academic distinction scholarship award at University and a postgraduate Clinical Audit prize in 2000. Her MSc included a dissertation on wound epithelium motility patterns.

She is author of numerous scientific publications in Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery journals and specialist presentations in her areas of interest. She continues in academic and surgical training roles on the NHS including undertaking responsibilities in the clinical training of Plastic Surgeons. She takes her training role into the voluntary sector training Plastic Surgeons in Ghana on the International Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery Project: Ghana.

As a Consultant Plastic Surgeon she participates in audit, clinical governance, appraisal and revalidation processes. She keeps her practice up to date by regular participation at BAPRAS, BSSH and other specialist meetings.

Pamela Cupples

Cassandra Harkness

Cassandra Harkness is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist working in the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit within the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Her main line of specialty is the rehabilitation of elective and traumatic hand injuries and the breast reconstructive patient, although all areas of plastic surgery are rehabilitated.

Rehabilitation coordination is strongly dependant on the communication between the patient, the surgeon and the therapist. The best outcomes are achieved when there is a clear understanding of the patient’s needs and therapy is compassionate and holistic.

Miss Harkness is a member of the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT), Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and is State Registered. She qualified in Glasgow with a BSc degree in 1985.

Professional activities include lecturing on the undergraduate Prosthetic and Orthotic course at Strathclyde University, acting as an External Course Assessor for BAHT Accredited Courses nationally, involvement with the plastic surgery team teaching with registrars and a regular teaching commitment with physiotherapy staff working within the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit. She is a Clinical Educator affiliated to the Caledonian University, teaching undergraduate and MSc students.

She has been involved in the organisation and setting up of the rehabilitation support in Korle Bu Plastics and Burns Unit in Ghana, a charity affiliated to the Canniesburn Unit.

Her clinical practice is kept updated by attending BAHT Conferences and The European Federation of Societies for Hand Therapy Conferences and other specialist meetings including regular meetings with the Scottish Society of Hand Therapists and the West of Scotland Therapists.

Clinical Governance and audit feature regularly within her NHS working environment and she is responsible for appraising members of staff forming CPD plans for individuals.
